Introduction: Interpersonal violence is a global health problem of epidemic proportions. Intimate partner violence is one of the most common forms of violence against women, while men are victims of violence outside the home environment, most of them, caused by unknown person. The facial region due to its anatomical peculiarities is a frequent target of lesions in the interpersonal violence. Objective: Showing the main bucomaxillofacial injuries due to interpersonal physical violence and to compare the results between the sexes. Methods: This study analyzed the odontolegial reports of victims of both sexes attended at the Legal Dentistry Center of IML in the city of São Paulo. Results: 148 reports were analyzed, 71 women (study group) and 77 men (control group). There was no difference between the groups: age; educational level; employability; and self-reported skin color. However, the women were victims of repeated aggressions caused by intimate partners (domestic violence), while men aggression occurred outside domestic environment by unknown person (p <0.001). The dental elements (fractured and avulsed teeth) were the most affected in both groups, with no differences between them (p=0,463); second in frequency were the labial contusion injuries. The instruments most commonly used by the aggressors were the natural ones and most of the injuries were considered mild, according to the Penal Code, although serious injuries were also present. Conclusion: Among the bucomaxillofacial structures, the teeth (fractures and avulsions) were the most damaged, with no difference between sexes.
Keywords: Violence against women, domestic violence, intimate partner violence, maxillofacial injuries.
