ABSTRACT

Introduction: Airbags represent an important passive safety measure in automotive vehicles, designed to protect occupants in the event of difficulties. However, there are accusations that its malfunction could cause injuries, as supported by a brief historical summary of data and literature on the use of airbags, from the first prototypes to their large-scale implementation. Case reports: The author present seven cases of deaths investigated by the Scientific Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro, resulting from, in theory, defective airbags. Discussion: Six of the cases evaluated present a unique pattern of penetrating injuries caused, in theory, by airbag malfunction, which resulted in implantation of a metallic fragment of the inflator component. Conclusion: Although airbags contribute to traffic safety, it is necessary to observe their correct conditions of use and maintenance, as well as pay attention to recalls.
