The Importance of Official Nomenclature in Forensic Medicine
Resumo
Esta carta destaca a importância da grafia correta do termo “médico-legista”, frequentemente utilizado de forma inadequada por profissionais e pela mídia. Com base em fontes normativas, como o Vocabulário Ortográfico da Língua Portuguesa (VOLP) da Academia Brasileira de Letras, reforça-se que a forma correta inclui o uso do hífen, não sendo reconhecidas variantes sem essa estrutura. Há ainda a possibilidade de uso do termo como substantivo ou adjetivo, bem como suas variações de gênero e número. A ausência de padronização é fator que compromete a valorização e o reconhecimento da especialidade. Por fim, ressalta-se a responsabilidade dos próprios especialistas em empregar e difundir a grafia correta, contribuindo para a uniformização terminológica e o fortalecimento da Medicina Legal e Perícia Médica no país.

Abstract
This letter highlights the importance of the correct spelling of the term “médico-legista,” which is often used improperly by professionals and the media. Based on normative sources, such as the Orthographic Vocabulary of the Portuguese Language (OVPL) of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, it is emphasized that the correct form includes the use of a hyphen, and variants without this structure are not recognized. The term may also function as either a noun or an adjective, with corresponding variations in gender and number. The lack of standardization is a factor that undermines the appreciation and recognition of the specialty. Finally, the responsibility of specialists to use and promote the correct spelling is underscored, contributing to terminological uniformity and to the strengthening of Legal Medicine and Medical Expertise in the country.
