Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Identification corresponds to a set of various procedures to individualize a person or object. Within the processes of analyzing a crime, Forensic Genetics stands out, which studies characteristics through DNA analysis. However, there are circumstances where DNA cannot provide the unequivocal identification of an individual, such as in the case of GM. To review the main methods of differentiating GM within the scope of forensic investigation. METHODS: The study consisted of a systematic review following the methodological instructions described in the PRISMA guidelines. Studies that did not meet the criteria of the systematic review were excluded, especially regarding relevance parameters and explicit relation to the investigated theme, as well as duplicate studies. After this stage, 35 articles were included in the study. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Although there are several methods available to differentiate GM, these methods may not always be effectively implemented in practice as they heavily depend on the quality of traces and evidence found at the crime scene or during the investigative process.
