APPLICATION OF THE BRAZILIAN TABLE FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF BODILY INJURY (INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM): CASE ANALYSIS AND FORENSIC STANDARDIZATION

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The publication of the Brazilian table for assessing bodily injury by the Brazilian Association of Legal Medicine and Medical Forensics in 2024 represents a significant advance in the systematization of expert assessment. This instrument is the unprecedented inclusion of the chapter “Cutaneous System,” which establishes specific parameters for quantifying functional impairment of the skin. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the application of this instrument through the validation of two cases involving permanent cutaneous impairment. METHODOLOGY: Descriptive, analytical, qualitative, and quantitative study based on a retrospective analysis of two previous cases—one involving workers’ compensation and the other social security. The “Rule of Nines” was used to estimate body surface area, the Damage Assessment Table was used to determine the extent of damage, and Balthazar’s Rule was used to calculate remaining capacity. RESULTS: The cases presented body surface area impairments of 14% and 30%, corresponding to damage assessments of 17.68% and 35.27%, representing mild and moderate impairment, respectively. DISCUSSION: The use of the Table allows for the identification of the most severe injuries, notably deep and/or extensive burns—whether of traumatic etiology or related to healthcare—that result in pathological healing and permanent functional impairment. This includes situations that required skin grafting and resulted in disturbances in thermoregulation and sensitivity, changes in sweating, skin fragility, intolerance to sun exposure, and chronic pruritus, moving away from purely aesthetic criteria and confirming uniformity, objectivity, and legal certainty in legal practice. CONCLUSION: The Table demonstrates standardization of expert practice, reduced subjectivity
